The Best Square Appointments Alternative for Tattoo Artists in 2026

March 26, 2026 · Updated September 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Square Appointments connects scheduling to a broad payment, point-of-sale, commerce, messaging, and reporting ecosystem. LVL2 starts from tattoo requests, artists, studios, flash, and client project context. Both can support bookings; they optimize for different centers of gravity.

Start with the Total Cost

Square publishes different subscription and processing rates across its appointment plans and payment methods. Calculate the monthly location charge, in-person payments, online deposits, card-on-file payments, invoices, hardware, and any marketing or staff tools you expect to use.

LVL2 publishes a free Starter plan plus Pro and Studio plans with different booking-fee structures. Compare the same real month on both systems and verify Square's current pricing and LVL2's current pricing at decision time.

Concretely: LVL2 Starter is free for artists — $0 platform subscription — and clients pay a booking fee on client-paid deposits. On merch, LVL2 takes 30% of merch profit on print-on-demand.

What Square Appointments Already Covers

Square's current feature list is extensive. Depending on plan, it includes:

  • Online booking, custom availability, and multiple calendars
  • Appointment deposits, prepayments, cancellation controls, and card-on-file payments
  • Automatic contracts, reminders, confirmations, and client messaging
  • A waitlist, resource management, classes, and multi-location tools on eligible plans
  • Point-of-sale hardware, invoices, inventory, online sales, and broad reporting

This breadth is a real advantage when a studio wants one payments and retail ecosystem. Do not choose an alternative based on the false premise that Square lacks deposits, waitlists, contracts, or messaging.

The question is how much adaptation your tattoo workflow needs on top of those capabilities.

Where LVL2's Tattoo Model Differs

Tattoo appointments often begin as projects, not fixed services. The artist may need placement, size, style, references, budget, and schedule flexibility before accepting. LVL2 keeps that request and review context close to the artist or studio page, then moves an approved project toward deposit and scheduling.

LVL2 also places flash, rich visual requests, artist and studio profiles, open-claim routing, team calendar, split workflows, and owner-specific merch inside the same tattoo-focused system. Square's strength is a broader commerce platform; LVL2's strength is the tattoo-specific path around the calendar.

Where Square Still Wins

To be fair: if you need hardware, Square is exceptional. Their card readers, terminals, and Square Register are the most polished in the industry. If you sell physical retail products with serious inventory complexity, Square's inventory management is strong. For email marketing and loyalty programs at the point of sale, Square also has solid tools.

If hardware, in-person retail, inventory depth, invoicing, or a unified general-commerce stack is your primary concern, Square deserves serious consideration. If project intake, artist approval, flash, and tattoo-native studio collaboration are the center of the business, test whether LVL2 reduces the custom setup required.

Making the Switch

Export the customer and appointment data Square makes available, reconcile active deposits and future appointments, and preserve the records you need for accounting and disputes. Recreate policies and services in a test workspace. Before publishing the new link, submit a request, approve it, collect a test deposit, reschedule it, and confirm every client message.
